What Gallerya is

Gallerya backs up the new photos and videos in your Photos library onto a USB-C drive you plug into your iPhone or iPad. No iCloud, no subscription for storage, no account. The drive is the archive; the app is a window onto it.

Getting started

  1. Plug a USB-C drive into your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Open Gallerya and tap Choose Backup Drive, then pick a folder on the drive. Gallerya creates a single folder inside it and never touches anything else.
  3. Grant access to your photo library when asked.
  4. Tap Back Up Now.

The first run copies everything new. Every run after that copies only what the drive does not already have.

Common questions

The app says my drive is not connected. iOS only reports a drive while it is mounted. Unplug and replug it, then pull down on the Backup screen to refresh. Nothing is lost — Gallerya finds the existing archive and carries on.

Can I use a folder on my iPhone instead of a drive? You can, and Gallerya will warn you that it is not a backup. A copy on the same device disappears with the device.

Does it re-encode my photos? No. It copies the original resource bytes — full-resolution HEIC/JPEG/RAW, original-quality video, Live Photo pairs, and both edited and unedited versions.

Is my archive readable without the app? Yes. It is ordinary folders and files on your drive, organised by date, with a plain-text catalog. Any computer can read it.

Backing up stopped part-way through. A backup only copies while Gallerya is open. If you switch to another app, iOS suspends the copying — you will get a reminder, and the next run picks up exactly where it stopped.

What does Cleanup delete? Only what you select, and only after you confirm. Deleting from Photos frees space on your phone and leaves the archive untouched. Removing from the archive frees space on the drive and leaves your photo library untouched. Every item carries a badge saying whether the archive already holds it.

I paid for the full version and it is asking again. Open Settings inside the app and tap Restore Purchases. The full version is a one-time purchase tied to your Apple Account.
